Vintage Dresser Goes Baby with Gold

We were contacted by a local expectant mom looking for a vintage dresser to make into a baby changing dresser.   She found our shop on etsy and was excited we were local and we were excited as well as we had the perfect dresser for her and her new little princess!!  Her colors for the room were to be pink, white and gold.  Doesn’t that sound so pretty!   Having boys I don’t think they would appreciate a pink room but I can dream!

So we gathered some ideas from pinterest.  Seriously, what would we do without pinterest, it’s the best!!  We were able to share ideas and color and get inspiration as to how customize her dresser.   We selected this beautiful dresser we had in stock that we picked up some months ago.  It had a mirror but she wasn’t interested in the mirror.  It has three top drawers perfect for all those little baby needs and two big drawers.    New hardware was needed too.

We found some beautiful knobs from the local Hobby Lobby and D. Lawless Hardware an online store  (they have almost every kind of knob you would like – fabulous resource).

She decided on Snow White from our favorite furniture paint line, General Finishes.   Since this dresser was a darker color we primed it, but if I was to do it again I would of given it 2 coats of primer, as covering dark wood is hard.  I ended up with 1 coat of primer and 4 coats of paint.   On that 4th coat is where the magic happened because it became snow white with no show through. I think the top I did an extra coat.   It was all sealed with the High Performance top coat for durability and so I could tape it off to add my gold lines.

We need to chat about gold detailing — it’s stunning.  Our client had a great design eye and we communicated quite a bit when doing the gold.  We started small and added and stopped when we had just the right balance.  Now on to the painting of this type of detailing — it is HARD!  Your taping needs to be almost perfect, you need a steady hand on the spots you can’t tape, you need time and patience (something I don’t always have a lot of).  However, with perseverance we had success.  The lines aren’t all perfect but it is a hand painted dresser so it was allowable.   This is not factory made but made with care.

Then the day arrived when our customer moved into her new home and we got to deliver this beauty.  The walls were painted a beautiful pink and the dresser fit perfectly in the spot she wanted it in.  Now that is perfection.

Enjoy the many photos!

It was a little sad to see this dresser go as I really loved it, however, I’m sure mom and baby are loving it!

Thanks for reading and sharing.
